Launching…

As well as working on a series of new paintings since leaving council last year, Greens candidate for Eden-Monaro Catherine Moore has been writing a book about changing the way we do politics.

“With so much of what has happened in politics over the last few years relevant to my subject, I was hoping to get the book out before the election, but to do it justice, I decided instead to publish selected chapters on a new website devoted to the topic,” says Catherine.

Catherine came up with the idea to write the book some years ago, and was going start after she left Palerang Council in September. But she couldn’t hold back and began work on it early in 2012.

The website will “go live” on July 25 at 11.40, and will comprise regularly posted articles that are adapted from chapters in the book, on issues that are particularly relevant to the election.

“Lots of the juicy bits will have to wait, because what I am focused on now, pre-election, is looking at where we are going wrong in politics, why people are so disenfranchised and cynical about it all and how we can do it better. After all, politics permeates our lives, whether we like it or not, and the decisions that elected representatives make could be so much better with a different approach to decision-making.

“There’s a substantial chapter dedicated to the media, which has played such a strong role in shaping people’s views, and of course quite a lot about climate change and asylum seekers.

“I’ve relished the opportunity to read some fascinating books as part of my research, the most recent of which has been “Earth Masters: Playing God with the climate”, by Clive Hamilton. It looks at the background of and ethical dilemmas surrounding geo-engineering as a way to solve the climate crisis.”

Some of the other topics covered in the book and which will be adapted for the website include preferences, art and activism, consumption and waste, planning, population, women, the national anthem, economic growth and political donations.
